記述とアーカイブの運動を通じて、
生活と表現のための広場をつくる

美術分野では「記述とアーカイブ」、つまり人々の活動が刻まれ残されることで紡がれる歴史や創造性に着目し、過去現在未来をつなぐ活発な運動をうみだしていきます。

「つくる」では、多彩な表現者たちを中心に公開制作や対話を重ね、ここに暮らす人々とともに生活とそこから生まれる表現について思考を深めます。また、資料収集や取材などのリサーチ活動を市民参加による共同研究とすることで、市民アーカイブの構築を目指します。そして「みせる」では、「つくる」で養われた多種多様な表現形式の作品展示や活動成果の発表を通じて、あきたにおける表現の可能性を拓きます。

表現や活動の成果がかたちになる過程には、幾度とないひらめきやゆらぎ、協働があり、議論の蓄積や技術/知識の更新のなかで、地道な行為と試行錯誤の連続です。そして、成果が人の目に触れるかたちへと送り出された状態には、創造力豊かな描写があり、洗練されたかたちがあり、そこから新たに始まるコミュニケーションがあります。

会期中には幾度も創造的な瞬間が訪れるでしょう。その断片的な瞬間の積み重なりが、価値ある表現/活動をかたちづくると人々が実感することで、あきたにおける創造的な運動が加速するよう試みます。

Creating plazas for life & artistic expression through archive and representation

In Modern & Contemporary Art, we will try to create an active movement that joins past, present and future by focusing on ‘representation and archiving’, or more precisely the artistry and history that emerge when creative activities take physical form.

During the ‘Creation’ stage, we engage in conversations and public creative activities with a diverse range of artists in an attempt to deepen our reflections about local lifestyles and their diverse artistic expressions. Further, we will establish a public archive by conducting interviews, gathering documents and doing research in collaboration with local people. During the ‘Presentation’ part of the exhibition, we will present what we have created and researched and thereby help expand Akita’s potential of artistic expression.

Numerous unforeseen ideas, collaborations and changes occur as artistic expressions and activities take shape. The process involves steady actions as well as a series of trials and errors as discussions accumulate and one’s knowledge and skills are constantly updated. Once the results are ready to be shared with other people, they have turned into creative representation of a sophisticated kind, and they become the starting point again for new communication.

This exhibition will involve many individual, creative moments. By allowing visitors and participants to understand that from the accumulation of such fragmented moments can give rise to valuable movements and artistic expressions, we aim to accelerate the creative momentum in Akita.

生活と社会的な活動、そして表現行為の密接な関係を探求します。「つくる」期間には、多彩な表現者を招き、活動を紹介し議論する場をひらき、「みせる」期間では、その記録を編集し展示として公開します。

1. A Plaza for Life and Artistic Expression

This project explores the close relationship between people’s lives, social activities and artistic expression. During the ‘Creation’ period, we invite a diverse range of artists and create a plaza where we introduce and discuss their works. In the following ‘Presentation’ period, we compile our recordings and present them in the form of an exhibition.

a) Creating and surviving in Akita

Multiple artists create an experimental, complex plaza through various acts and activities like talks, performances and public productions.

b) Agriculture, movements & expression

We introduce a variety of interdisciplinary movements and ideas centered on agriculture.

C) Representation and archive

We explore acts of documentation and recording as well as the culture that emerges from them, together with experts like local historic researchers, publishers and art historians.

2. ココラボ アーカイブプロジェクト
「ココラブ」

2005年に秋田市の川反中央ビルにて活動を始めたアートスペース・ココラボラトリー（通称ココラボ）の15年間の活動を振り返り、紹介します。有志で集まったプロジェクトメンバーと共に、当時の資料やかつて展示された作品、関わった人々の証言などをすくい取り、この地域で積み重ねられた多彩な活動を公開します。

2. “cocolab” – A cocolaboratory Archive Project

This project introduces and reflects on the past fifteen years of cocolaboratory (or ‘cocolab’), which opened its doors at the Kawabata Chuo Building in 2005. Together with volunteering project members, we gather artworks shown during previous exhibitions, documents and testimonies, and exhibit an archive of the diverse artistic activities that took place in the region.

3. 村山留里子
「MASK」

ココラブ関連プロジェクト。「みせる」期間に、project room sasao*で2012年に開催された村山留里子個展「MASK」を再現展示し、また、2020年から村山が取り組む「MASK」シリーズの新作群も発表します。

3. Ruriko Murayama
“MASK”

This project is related to cocolab. During the ‘Presentation’ period, this project recreates Ruriko Murayama’s solo exhibition ‘MASK’ (originally held in 2012 at project room sasao). New works from Murayama’s ‘MASK’ series, created since 2020, will also be on display. (project room sasao was an art space conceptualized and run by cocolab co-founder Chiguchi Sasao on Kawabata Chuo Building’s third floor.)

4. 皆川嘉左ヱ門
「社会運動としての農民彫刻」

農民彫刻家 皆川嘉左ヱ門は、町会議員として政治に参加し、減反政策に対するデモ活動を展開したり、減反田を用いて「減反画廊」という野外美術ギャラリーを運営したことでも知られます。社会活動家としての嘉左ヱ門に焦点をあて、作品や資料を「みせる」期間に展示します。

4. Kazaemon Minagawa
“Farmer’s Sculpturing as Social Movement”

Farmer’s sculptor Kazaemon Minagawa is also known for his political work as a town council member, for organizing demonstrations against acreage reduction policies, and for running an outdoor space called ‘Gen-tan Garou’ (lit. ‘Anti-reduction Art Gallery’) in an anti-reduction rice paddy. During the ‘Presentation’ period, we will exhibit artworks and documents focusing on Kazaemon Minagawa’s role as a social activist.

5. 荒木優光
「一聴永楽」

独自の音場空間を構築し、多岐にわたる媒体を用いて作品を発表してきたアーティスト・荒木優光による新作プロジェクト「一聴永楽(いっちょう えいらく)」。「うた」にまつわる多声的なコンテンツを永続的に紡ぎ続けるという本プロジェクトを、民謡をはじめとする数多の無形文化財を有する土地・秋田から新たにスタートさせます。発端は、形なき文化のかたちに興味を持った荒木の秋田体験と、絶唱する歌手・東海林太郎(1898～1972)の歌碑との出会いから。かつて、小高い山の木の上に登った東海林太郎がはるか遠くの海に思いを馳せ、声を発したように、今・ここという時世から遠くを眺め発声し続ける絵巻物を、複数の会場で展開します。

5. Araki Masamitsu
“Eternal Echoes”

“Eternal Echoes” is a new project by Masamitsu Araki, whose artworks span a variety of media and involve the creation of unique sound spaces. Araki chose Akita, a region rich in intangible cultural properties such as folk songs, as the starting point of this project, which will perpetually weave polyphonic recordings into song-like structures. The idea originates in Araki’s experiences in Akita, which he visited out of interest in the forms intangible culture may take, and by his encounter with the statue of singer Shoji Taro (1898-1972). Just like Shoji Taro, who was inspired to sing when he climbed atop a tree and dreamed of the far-away ocean, Araki’s speaking picture scrolls will unfold across multiple venues as they gaze at a world far away from our present times.

6. 佐藤研吾
「アキタノユメのイエ計画」

福島県大玉村を拠点に活動する建築家・佐藤研吾による新作プロジェクト「アキタノユメのイエ計画」。マタギ修行のために秋田・秋の宮へ移り住んだある友人の生活を起点に、マタギの山を視る眼差しと手つきを学びながら、彼のあるかもしれない秋田のイエの計画を練る。山村での滞在を繰り返し、マタギの暮らしとその環境を丁寧にみつめながら、県内で木材を調達し、自作の木製写真機を用いた写真撮影やスケッチ、山の稜線をトレースした模型の作成、山仕事で用いる鍛冶道具の試作などを展開。プロジェクトの軌跡を独自の形式で会場に描き出す。「みせる」期間中においても秋田での滞在を行い、頭と身体を使いながら、アキタの風景を捉えるための試作を連ねていく。

6. Kengo Sato
“Imaginary House in Akita”

“Imaginary House in Akita” is the latest project by architect Kengo Sato, who lives in Otama in Fukushima Prefecture. Inspired by a friend who moved to Akinomiya in Akita to pursue the Matagi way of life, Sato studies his friend’s behavior – his gestures or the way he observes the mountains – and conceptualizes a hypothetical house in which his friend may live. At the venue, we will present the unusual trajectory of this project in a unique fashion. Sato, who visited the mountain village numerous times to learn first-hand about his Matagi friend’s life and his environment, procured lumber from within Akita Prefecture, created hand-drawn sketches as well as photographs using a self-built wooden camera, produced a model of a mountain ridge, and developed prototypes of blacksmithing tools for use in the mountains. Sato will stay in Akita for the duration of the “Presentation” phase and develop prototypes to capture Akita’s scenery.

7. 草彅裕
「200年をたがやす」
記録プロジェクト

「つくる」から「みせる」にかけて徐々に変化していく文化創造館の空間を人の営みも交え、写真で記録するプロジェクト。併せて、草彅が雄物川河口新屋浜で石の記録をつづける作品《ISI》を発表します。

7. Yu Kusanagi
‘ISI’ exhibition
‘Record of Cultivating Successive Wisdoms’ Project

This project records in photographs the gradual changes that take place in the Akita City Cultural Creation Center and in people’s activities during the ‘Creation’ and ‘Presentation’ periods. Simultaneously, Yu Kusanagi will exhibit his series ‘ISI,’ a continuing photographic record of stones found on Shinya beach at the mouth of the Omono River.

8.「プロジェクトの研究会」

文化創造館のコーディネーターや藤浩志館長とともに、「文化創造館を拠点とした秋田のまちの使い方/あり方」をテーマとして、様々な角度からまちを使ったプロジェクトの研究に取り組みます。

8. “Project Commons”

Together with the director Hiroshi Fuji and coordinators of the Akita City Cultural Creation Center, we research various projects that engage with Akita under the standpoints ‘what should the city of Akita be like, and how could it be utilized by the Center?’ We are currently recruiting researchers for phase one.
