展覧会「200年をたがやす」｜CULTIVATING SUCCESSIVE WISDOMS

200年をたがやす

「200年」という幅で、過去に、そして未来へと、様々な旅路であきたを探る展覧会です。200年前は江戸時代。明治維新よりも以前に遡ります。歴史教科書などではあまり区切られることのない幅で物事を捉え、人々の営みをたどることから、私たちのこれからの生活や豊かさについて模索していきたいと思います。

「Culture（文化）」は「Cultivate（耕す）」を語源とします。無数の先人がたがやしてきた土壌に、私たちの文化は形成されているのです。本展覧会は、生活・産業、食、工芸、美術、舞台の5分野を軸に展開されます。一見バラバラな領域ですが、どれも私たちが生きるうえで不可欠なもので、複雑に関係し合っています。

食べることは人（や多くの生物）の生命を維持するために不可欠ですが、人は食を飽くことなく探求し、それを代々継承することで豊かな食文化を築いてきました。農業や鉱業、林業などの産業は近年その重要性が見直されていますが、多様な産業は地域文化の形成に不可欠です。一方で、大量生産・消費の諸問題にやっと本格的に世界が取り組むようになった昨今、長年受け継がれてきた工芸の知や技術への眼差しも変わりはじめています。また、現代アートということばが定着する一方で、美術表現の手法や形式は加速度的に多様化・複雑化していますが、同時に既成概念を疑い常に新たな価値を提起する運動を、美術という領域は切り拓いてきました。そして、現在まで数多く伝承される芸能や祭祀、身体を用いた表現の豊かな系譜は、現代の舞台芸術作品に受け継がれています。

本展覧会では、「あきた」を秋田市や秋田県という行政区分に必ずしも限定していません。あきたという言葉からどこを、あるいはどれくらいの領域を思い浮かべるかは、人それぞれでしょう。その異なる個別の感覚を大切にしていきたいと考えています。
そもそも人の暮らしや文化は、越境の連続によりかたちづくられてきたもので、厳密に領域や境界を定義するのは困難です。それは、200年以上前に三河国を出て、あきたに長く逗留し、東北を歩き続けた菅江真澄の偉業を丁寧に残してきたこの地の人々にとって、受け入れやすい価値観ではないでしょうか。
また、この展覧会であきたの文化を完璧に網羅することは不可能で、穴はあってもよいと考えています。むしろ、大きくひろげた不完全な風呂敷の穴を、これから知恵や技術をもつ多くの人に繕い補完していっていただきたいと思っています。穴から新たな芽が芽吹くなら、それもよいでしょう。

そしてなによりも、本展覧会は多様な参加により成立するプラットフォームとなることを目指し、会期を2つに分けて公開します。 第一期はオープンスタジオ期間の「つくる」。アーティストや職人、研究者などの専門家を中心としつつも、この地域に暮らす多彩な人々と一緒に、生活・産業、食、工芸、美術、舞台という5つの要素について、調査・研究と創作活動を展開しました。
そして第二期は展示期間の「みせる」。「つくる」の成果を、展覧会を軸に、公演やイベントなども交えて日々変化する動きのある場として公開します。
過去のかけらをたぐり歴史の網目を垣間見、未来をつかむべく創造行為を展開することで、あきたの文化をたがやす活動を継承していきます。

Cultivating Successive Wisdoms

This is an exhibition that explores Akita on various paths in the span of two hundred years both into the past and into the future. Two hundred years ago Japan was in the Edo period still decades away from the Meiji Restoration. By exploring various things in a timeframe not usually covered in history textbooks and by tracing people’s activities, the exhibition aims to explore perspectives for our future lives and well-being.
The word ‘culture’ is derived from the verb ‘to cultivate.’ Our culture is built on land that has been cultivated by countless generations of our ancestors. This exhibition will focus on the five fields of Cuisine, Crafts, Life & Industry, Modern & Contemporary Art, and Performing Arts. These fields may seem disparate at first glance, yet they are indispensable parts of our daily lives, and connected to each other in intricate ways.

Food is essential to support human life (as well as that of many other lifeforms). The tireless pursuit of something to eat has through the generations led to the creation of a rich culture surrounding food. In recent years, the importance of industries such as agriculture, mining and forestry have begun being reevaluated, but a diverse range of industries are necessary for the foundation of a region’s culture. While the world has finally started to face the problems of mass production and consumption, there is also a change in how we view and value the skills and knowledge of crafts that have been handed down over many decades. With the term ‘contemporary art’ firmly established as part of our culture, there is an ever-accelerating diversification of the genres and methods of artistic expression. The field of art has enabled movements that discover and create new ideas and values by questioning the old ones. Rituals and folk performing arts have been handed down through generations and form a rich history of physical expression that influences and gives shape to the performing arts of our contemporary times.

In this exhibition, ‘Akita’ is not limited to administrative concepts like ‘Akita City’ or ‘Akita Prefecture.’ How far the region stretches that people associate with the word ‘Akita’ depends on every individual. We believe there is value in such diverging individual differences.
In the first place, culture and people’s lives have been shaped by ongoing crossings, and precise definitions of regions or borders are a difficult task. This is a circumstance that should be easily accepted by the people of this region, who have carefully preserved the work of Masumi Sugae, a scholar who 200 years ago left Mikawa Province to journey through the Tohoku region, spending the majority of his time in Akita.
It is impossible to cover the entirety of Akita’s culture in this exhibition, but we believe it is okay if there are holes. On the contrary, we welcome people to close and cover the holes in this imperfect rug with their own skills and wisdoms. And with some luck, something new will emerge from these holes.

We intend this exhibition to become a platform created through various forms of participation. Accordingly, the exhibition period is divided into two parts.

The exhibition begins with the ‘Creation’ open-studio phase. Together with artists, artisans, researchers and other specialists, as well as the diverse people living in this region, we will conduct creative activities and research in the five fields of Cuisine, Crafts, Life & Industry, Modern & Contemporary Art, and Performing Arts. Based in the Akita City Cultural Creation Center, we will aim to expand our creative horizons.
The second phase of the exhibition will be ‘Presentation’. Within the frame of an exhibition, we will present the results of the ‘Creation’ phase in the form of an ever-changing place, including live performances and various events.
We want to explore fragments of the past, to glimpse at the mesh of history, and use what we find to develop creative acts that improve our future. We want to continue cultivating the culture of our region.
